Stack The Deck

the who / the what

Product Launch Materials for Mattel Creations.

the situation

To celebrate Miami Art Basel, Mattel Creations, in collaboration with the Museum of Graffiti, were releasing a special UNO deck. This deck will feature artworks from 8 renowned street artists and will include live-painted WILD cards during the Art Basel event. They needed key visuals to communicate the rich storytelling for this product , which would be used on the Mattel Creations website and social media platforms.

The task was to tell the story of these two worlds coming together. Elevate the gritty artform to museum status with and tap into the authenticity of each artist's unique background and expression. All wrapped up into one heroic deck of cards.

To accomplish this, I collaborated with a 3D artist  to bring the concept to life. Pulling inspiration from the artist and graffiti tools itself. As well as the museum, the walls, the floor, the pitted paint that’s left on a wall after it has been painted hundreds of times… Using these references, we developed a visual style that captured the vibrant and energetic nature of both street art and the showcase itself. A significant challenge for this was that the product wasn’t actually made yet and wasn't supposed to go into production until after the launch event. Turning that obstacle into an opportunity… The 3D-rendered cards allowed for greater control over the lighting, angles, and compositions (see cards hurtling through space image). Allowing us to recreate details in the product and control the environment.

These assets were applied to a series of landing pages on the Mattel Creations site. Each dedicated to highlighting different aspects of the collaboration, the artist stories and key launch information.
